Finally
I compose myself enough to leave the landing deck and head to what
was our quarters with everyone staring at my back with a concerned
look on their face. It's not like I cared anymore.
The
next few days were the strangest. We were stuck in jump space
and the other pilots were trying to get me out of my quarters.
Literally I was staring at the walls, her picture hanging on one,
along with out wedding pictures and the squad. For the first time
in days I stroll to the bar. I tell the bartender to give me scotch
and to leave the bottle. Drinking glass after glass I leave with
the bottle and had to the flight deck. Not knowing why I notice
the flight deck is still covered with skid marks and I smile slightly.
Heading downstairs I walk all the way to the end of the ship.
They moved my fighter, but that was it.
Slowly
Knight steps up behind me, "How we feeling today Bill?"
Looking back at him, "Same way I felt after we jumped.
Its not going to go away is it?"
"No it isn't. But it wasn't your fault either." He replied.
"It is my fault. I should have never left her like that.
I abandoned the wingman's oath... and I abandoned my wife. I'll
never forgive myself for that." I told him.
"Its still not your fault, and you did miss the funeral
services." He said.
"That is really something I wanted to hear." I told him
sarcastically.
Finally the ship jumped out of jump space. "Colonel Blair
to the bridge."
"Guess I'm needed. Look seriously I'll catch you later."
I told Knight.
With
that call I head to the bridge. "Captain what is up?"
"It seems we've come out of space in Sol System right near
Jupiter. But it's... different. We don't know where we are, but
it seems there is a ship coming to investigate." He told me.
"We have to get out of here. We don't know how they will
react and we don't need a battle with an unknown force. Head to
the asteroids we'll hide out in there and establish a base of
operations." I requested.
He
gave the order and we ran into the asteroid field right into the
middle. The ship barely saw us, but we caught a glimpse of it.
Readings are unknown. It had a saucer attached with a neck to
a rounded hull with 2 nacelles coming out of it. Insignia was
U.S.S Farragut. No matter what we decide that we will not expose
ourselves.
During
the next 6 months we hollow out asteroids and setup a base of
operations. Interconnecting others we got something going. Various
missions are sent out and we garner supplies, weapons, and information.
Taking the weapons we outfit the ships and deposit weapon batteries
onto other asteroids to serve as a battle grid. The information
we have gathered has showed that we aren't home, but that the
Federation is not against us. We live in isolation for the time
being, but still not being able to shake these feelings I got
about Jen...
I
look around the base one last time. I see the huge doors leading
outside. How we managed to fit out little fleet inside I am amazed.
Slowly though I walk over to my fighter and painted the name Viper
on the Centurion. My lost love and Rapier on the Galaxy ship we
had. The one we took many trips on alone for vacations. Good-byes
are said and I tell them work on a way to get home. If you do,
find me. Research whatever you have to. Do whatever it takes.
With that last look I leave. I had decided to join Starfleet.
The End
I hope you had
as much fun reading this as I did writing it.
