Background:
As
colonization of the outer worlds spread, so did the number
of combat drops into off-world complexes. The Companys
policy of using prefabricated colonies and cheap materials
for most any terrain they chose to build upon stretched
the technologies to their limits. Inhospitable environments
deteriorated these complexes to the point that it became
common for marine squads to encounter jammed doors, aging
computers and sometimes lethal hazards. To maintain their
effectiveness, marines now needed to be technically savvy
as well as tactically competent. These requirements helped
strengthen the role of the Combat Engineer a marine
specialist well equipped with portable hacking devices
to interface with the worn technology of colony complexes.
The Engineer also carries a welding torch to cut their
way through damaged areas, or weld them shut if the situation
requires it. Assisting the squad in forming a defensive
perimeter, the Engineer also carries one disassembled
sentry gun into battle that he can build and plant in
a matter of seconds. The sentry gun does carry limited
ammunition, but is invaluable for temporarily securing
an area, or redirecting an alien attack. Engineers are
masters of technology, able to repair or bypass most military
and civilian equipment, but are not as well-equipped for
battle as others in their squad. Though they can defend
themselves if they need to, it is advised to protect them
well. |
